Melbourne, Canberra, regional NSW and Perth
If you love British eccentricity, then don’t miss the triple bill of ballet
at Melbourne’s State Theatre this month. The Australian Ballet is
presenting British Liaisons, three ballets that perfectly capture the
Brits’ penchant for the sublime and the ridiculous. In the former
category is Christopher Weeldon’s After the Rain (featuring exquisite
choreography and the gorgeous first movement of Arvo Pärt’s Tabula
Rasa). In the latter category is Ninette de Valois’ Checkmate (featuring
chess costumes that would give Garry Kasparov nightmares, above).
This is an exceedingly good time of year for ballet across Australia.
This month, The Dancers Company (the regional touring arm of
The Australian Ballet) brings its swooning production of Don Quixote
to regional New South Wales and Canberra. Then, next month in
Perth, the West Australian Ballet presents Taming of the Shrew,
John Cranko’s reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic comedy.
CRAGGY RANGE PINOT NOIR 2009
Te Muna Road Vineyard
Subtle and complex, frankly exquisite. This Pinot
from the Martinborough region of New Zealand’s
North Island is beautiful drinking and true show-
off stuff. Wine to wave at the doubters and say:
“Hey, here’s what it’s all about.” Sweet cherry, dark
cherry and spice fruit flavours with a fine measure
of forest floor (that earthy dimension that might be
mistaken for rabbit that’s seen better days). The
texture is smooth and velvety while acids do their
duty keeping things tight and tannins give gentle
grip. Quite different in style from its bolder Central
Otago cousins yet full enough, still, for roast duck.
The Craggy Range products all are single-vineyard
wines and both whites and reds are well worth a
try. Make it your business to taste the ’09 Hawkes
Bay Syrah; who says the Kiwis can’t do Shiraz?
Paul Foster, wine educator, writer and director
at The Wine Society.
2010 RESERVE AMBER ALE
Brewery: Endeavour True Vintage Beer
RRP: $4.95 bottle, $17.95 per 4 pack,
$79.94 per carton
Endeavour True Vintage Beer has emerged recently
as a strong contender in the innovative craft
brewing scene blossoming across Australia. With
a dedicated team (including Chartered Accountant
Dan Hastings) these guys brew beer with only the
finest of ingredients. Their 2010 Vintage Amber Ale
(the vintage is noted, like wine, to reflect variations in
ingredients from year to year) is perfect for drinking
right now, in the cooler months, due to super-fine
carbonation and a deliciously warm blend of malt,
chocolate and coffee.
It’s a bottle-conditioned brew meaning final
conditioning occurs in the bottle and can actually
improve over time, unlike filtered beers. So, if
you can manage it, keeping some of these in the
cellar will be very rewarding.

Diamonds, it seems, are not just a girl’s best friend. They’re
becoming part of a girl’s financial plan too (the sparklers are now
selling for higher figures than those achieved before the GFC).
Auction house Sotheby’s recently sold a single pink diamond,
the size of a SIM card, for a staggering $10.3 million. The fancy
intense pink diamond had collectors dazzled, as the demand for
rare gems continues.
And if you fancy a little intense pink of your own, why not snap up
an Argyle Pink Diamond Limited Edition O Pendant (RRP $7700)?
The pendant showcases gems from Western Australia’s Argyle
diamond mine, still the world’s only consistent producer of
natural pink diamonds. The pendant holds over a
carat of precious Argyle diamonds pavé set in
18-carat rose gold, mounted on a white
gold link chain. Only one hundred
pendants exist worldwide, so
you’ll need to get in quick.
